Overview

Prism Electric provided full electrical construction for the new ground-up Austin Convention Center — a 1,469,957 square foot world-class convention and event facility in the heart of downtown Austin.

The scope included a 34.5kV utility service distributed through multiple project substations, stepping down to 480/277V and 120/208V services throughout. Six natural gas generators and paralleling switchgear bring in three simultaneous utility feeds, ensuring reliable, redundant power across the entire facility. An in-depth architectural and decorative lighting package with ETC lighting controls supports full-color scenes and dynamic visual displays suited for large-scale events. A complete fire alarm system was installed, with rough-in infrastructure in place for future security, AV, and data systems.

Work required precise sequencing and continuous coordination with the City of Austin and surrounding stakeholders to maintain operations in an active urban environment. Current discussions are underway to pursue LEED Platinum certification and integrate a solar energy system, positioning the convention center as a model for sustainable public infrastructure.
